The Do's and Don'ts of Washing Cars
I recently attended a detailing day. No, I didn’t pay someone to detail my car. I paid someone to teach me how to detail my car. I got taught how to use certain products and common mistake people do while washing their cars. I’ve broken it down into simple DO’s and DON’Ts of washing cars.
DO: Wash your wheels first, with different sponges! Your wheels pick up all sorts of crap your car doesn’t, as a result, it is probably one of the most dirtiest part of your car. You don’t want to damage your paint with all the dirt, brake dust, and tar that your wheels pick up
DO: Wash from the top down (after the wheels of course). Think of it as washing the dirt from your body. If you go from bottom up, all the dirt at the top will fall to the bottom after you clean it and you would have to do it all again
DO: Keep 2 buckets with you. One for the wash, and one to dip the sponge in after you sud your car. This attempts to keep all the dirt in one bucket, and all the good foamy stuff in another
DO: Wash your car as often as possible. Try aiming for once a week. The more you wash, the easier it is to keep your car clean.
DO: Get a high pressure hose. Its better for the environment and is a better tool when washing your car
DON’T: Apply a wax before a polish. Wax should be the LAST thing on the car
DON’T: Wash your car in the sun or after a drive. Heat will dry up soap and water quicker which leads to spots and watermarks.
DON’T: Let the car air dry. Wash your car in quarters
