Wheel Fever - Let's Rawk!

The Truth About Mod Chips

I'm sure you've seen these online, they call themselves Mod Chips, or Performance Chips or something equally as silly. They also claim up to 15-20 extra horsepower if installed, resulting in:
- A more powerful car
- Great 0-100km/h times
- Greater Fuel efficiency
- Higher top speed

This product sounds like a dream result, especially for around $20!! But why haven’t any top tuning houses got this product in their cars? Because it’s a big fat scam. !

WHAT IT IS: From my research, all that they provide is a resistor to attach to your ECU (Engine Control Unit) and trick your computer's brain in thinking that it is getting more air than it actually is and thus inject more fuel into the engine. Firstly, to charge $20 for a resistor that cost's a about $0.10 at an electronics store is plain highway robbery

PROBLEMS: Initially the idea sounds good. More fuel = more power! This is only true is you have enough air to combust the fuel in your engine. If you have too much fuel in your air/fuel ratio, it results in your engine running rich. This is undesirable because you will have leftover unburnt fuel that is released to the atmosphere causing pollution. Intuitively, this also increases the rate in which fuel is pumped into your engine, and if this fuel is unburnt, then it leads to increased fuel consumption!

CONCLUSION: I wouldnt use such product if my life depended on it!
