Premium Petrol, worth the Premium in Price?

May 18th 2006 22:00

With the rising cost of petrol in our society today there have been all sorts of ways to help reduce your petrol consumption. A common statement has been going around is that Premium petrol, whilst costing more, will reduce your petrol consumption and may reduce overall cost of petrol.

The science behind this is fairly simple, although slightly flawed. Our regular pump petrol, has 92 RON (Research Octane Number). With a higher RON its generally seen as higher octane levels in fuel = higher power = less fuel needed for same amount of go.

So, benefits of 95 RON and 98 RON petrol state the following*:
- Less engine knock (better for your engine)
- Higher density for lower fuel consumption
- Additives that help keep your engine clean, again relating to better performance and lower fuel consumption

Now, you will only get a power increase (and better fuel efficiency) if your car is suited to a higher octane rating. Some (especially older) cars will function the same if not worse with a higher octane rating. The car itself and the way you drive will also effect your petrol consumption.

As a general rule, you should get Premium if*:
- The manufacturer tells you to
- You are driving a high performance car tuned for higher octane ratings
- You are driving a pre 1986 vehicle that runs on leaded petrol
- You observe knocking in your engine when using normal unleaded

At the end of the day, everybody (and every car) is different. Even if it’s the same make and model you will find discrepancies with fuel consumption. My advice is to test out different fuels from different companies and find what’s best for you. This of course is a lengthy process but when you find a good thing you should stick to it.

What have you found when filling up on premium?
