Initial D Street Stage on PSP
June 1st 2006 23:10
I managed to get my hands on a PSP last night, and i've been thinking about buying a PSP for awhile now for one sole reason - Initial D Street Stage.
Personally I think all car enthusiasts should be obsessed with, or least familiar with the Initial D cartoons. In a nutshell, it is a Japanese cartoon that follows the life of a Tofu delivery boy and his adventures in street racing. Ok, that is probably the worst description ever...it really is more exciting than I made it sound!
When I heard that this game was out I just HAD to have it, it was akin to how I bought the PS2 just to play Gran Turismo 4. I had played the Initial D arcade versions in arcades (duh!) and thought it was a brilliant game. Not 100% realistic but still fun nonetheless. The only downfall of the game is that there isn't a English version yet.
So there I was last night, fumbling around all the Japanese menu's of the game. I took 20 minutes just to figure out how to write my name in! I fittingly typed in my alias Orido and was then taken to car selection. My weapon of choice was the Altezza (SXE10R) - well balanced, high revving, quite a bit of stock power and said to be the cousin of the hero car, the hachi roku.
What happened next was amazing! It let me choose a way to customise a car, I got given choices whether to have a Toyota/TRD, a VOLK/C-ONE, or TOM's route of customising the car - all prominent names in the aftermarket tuning world.
I raced Itsuki first (lol) in some circuit and i got beat...but I finally got some wins under the belt and when you win (or lose) you get to choose 1 of 3 mystery cards. it ranges from character playing cards (which dont seem to do anything), race cards and performance and cosmetic add ons. The character and race card just seem to have information about the cartoon and characters on them, but the performance/cosmetic add ons assist your car in future races.
The gameplay was pretty unrealistic, taking hairpins at 150km/h is a joke! You hardly ever need to use the brake in the game and although it is a relatively easy game to pick up, it will be hard to master. Bring on the sleepless nights!
