How to Cut Fuel Bills

May 23rd 2006 00:07
In contrast to the small gains from using a premium unleaded petrol, the average motorist can reduce their fuel bills by at least 10% (and possibly up to 25%), regardless of what car they drive or what fuel they use. This can be achieved by following these 10 simple tips*:
Accelerate gently – it’s a fact, aggressive driving increases petrol consumption
Flow smoothly with the traffic – this relates back to the first point!
Avoid excessive speeds – again, this is a follow on from points 1 and 2. Think about it as if you were running. Running really fast and sprinting will use more energy than a light walk
Avoid lengthy idling – this should be common sense. If you are waiting for someone, turn off your engine! Saves the environment too
Don’t drive unnecessarily – walk, take a bike..get some exercise =)
Keep your car well maintained – A well maintained car will use less petrol. I go back to analogy of a human. If you are healthy and fit, you tend to have more energy in you
Keep tyres properly inflated – a key point! Underinflated tyres can have drastic effects on fuel consumption.
Use the air-conditioner sparingly – although there is a loophole. The A/C zaps your car’s energy and thus needs to produce more and uses up fuel consumption. Solution? Use your windows. BUT! At speeds over 80kmh, the aerodynamic benefits from your car outweigh the A/C usage.
Minimise wind resistance – wind up your windows when traveling if you don’t need to
Remove unnecessary weight from the car – get rid of unnecessary items like golf clubs, again, if you were running a marathon with 10kg extra on your back, it would tire you out more!

Hope these tips help save you a dollar or 2. Safe driving!

A yes and know on the A/C, Bri... not using your A/C shortens the life of the compressor, which costs you in the long run.
