Volkswagen Up!

May 1st 2009 06:10
A production version of the Up! concept cars has just been confirmed for 2011, and all the signs point to a car which will be the right size and price to slide in below the Polo down under in Australia.

Volkswagen has given few specifics on how the Up! will go from motor show tease to showroom reality, but it has chosen Slovakia as the production site for what is being called the 'New Small Family'.

This could mean one car or many to satisfy the needs of the Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda brands. But there will definitely be both three and five-door hatchbacks - at least at first.

Volkswagen Up

Volkswagen Group began its search for a price fighter in 2007 when it unveiled the original Up! concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show, complete with a rear-mounted engine. It stretched the idea into a baby people mover a few weeks later at the Tokyo Motor Show.

It has now chosen the factory at Bratislava in Slovakia to build the production car, partly because the site already feeds four brands at the same time.

"Our team at Volkswagen in Slovakia is ideally prepared to provide the flexibility required for the production of the New Small Family," says the chairman of Volkswagen Group, Dr Martin Winterkorn.

Volkswagen is expected to get the Up! first - if it carries that name, followed by Seat and Skoda.

The plans for Australia are just as murky, although Volkswagen says it is keen to get the car.

"The Up! is still a concept and they have not confirmed the production car," says Volkswagen Group spokesman, Karl Gehling.

But he admits the 'New Small Family' is being watched closely.

"It's something we'll certainly be looking at. It will have to be price competitive but it looks a very promising product to expand our range."

Audi TT RS

February 25th 2009 12:56
The syncopated beat of a turbocharged five-cylinder motor is coming back to Audi.

The unusual engine design was the heart of the original Quattro that revolutionised performance motoring in the 1980s, as well as dominating the World Rally Championship.

Now the feisty five is coming back for a fast-car pacesetter called the TT RS.

It won't be spitting flames or roaring through an open exhaust like the engines used in the Quattro coupes which convinced the world that all-wheel drive was the best way to put big power on the ground, but Audi is promising more than 225kW to turn the go-faster TT into something special.

"It will be a sensation little rocketship," claims the spokesperson for Audi Australia, Anna Burgdorf.

Audi TT RS
Audi TT RS

The final figures will not be revealed until the TT RS makes its public debut in a fortnight at the Geneva Motor Show, but Audi is hinting at a four-second sprint to 100km/h and a potential top speed well beyond its electronically-limited 250km/h.

The TT RS will be built as both a coupe and convertible, with a bunch of body tweaking work to reflect the muscular potential of the 2.5-litre engine hooked to its quattro drive system.

The bad news is a price-tag beyond $100,000, based on today's TT S at $98,900.

But the good news is that car TT RS will definitely come to Australia.

It will be sold as a coupe only. The convertible is considered too limiting, and the timing is around six months after the first deliveries in Europe.

"The car will come to Australia. It will definitely come in 2010 but it's very hard to tie down a date at this stage," says Burgdorf.

She cannot comment on details, including the move away from inline fours and V6s to the new five, but says the TT RS is definitely not a show car or a limited-edition tease.

"It is a production car. What will be shown on the stand at Geneva is the production car," she says.

"We don't know the answer on production numbers, but it is a regular production model. And the engine is a new one that allows the TT to perform extremely well with good fuel economy."

Porsche Cayenne Diesel

February 18th 2009 12:21
Porsche, the famous German maker of sports cars and race machines makes a big SUV wagon, then it confirms it is making a four-door sporty Porsche and now there's a diesel engine.

It just underlines how far diesel has come in penetrating the market, especially in Europe, that even a prestige brand like Porsche now must embrace diesel, albeit at this stage only as one of the engine choices in its Cayenne four-wheel-drive wagons.

The entry-level Cayenne is the V6 3.5-litre petrol unit. The diesel version is based on that trim level and, at $101,900 also sells for less than what you can buy any Porsche sports car. The V8 petrol Cayennes are $134,500 to $215,200 so this new Cayenne diesel looms as good value, considering its 550Nm of torque transferring to good performance.

As we are learning, a diesel doesn't have to be a slug, especially if it's a German engine. Moving 2.3 tonnes of big 4WD from rest to 100km/h in 8.3 seconds is respectable by any measure. Porsche says it will even run out to 214km/h.

Porsche Cayenne

The winner is the fuel economy, rated at 9.3 litres/100km, or better than 30 miles a gallon in the old money. The Cayenne's 100-litre tank promises a good touring range at these figures.

The diesel engine is a three-litre V6 with variable-geometry turbocharger, giving 176kW at 4000 to 4400rpm while that 500Nm of torque comes on nice and early from 2000 to 2250rpm. If those figures sound familiar, look at the Audi engine range...

The only transmission available with the diesel on Cayenne is the Tiptronic S, a six-speed that can be changed manually via rocker switches on the steering wheel. When the wagon is stopped in gear and the foot brake pressed, a clutch automatically disconnects the engine from the driveline, saving a few more drops of oily fuel.

This thing is no poseur, either. It has a low-range transfer (2.7:1), decent ground clearance which can be adjusted if the optional air suspension is ordered (tp to 271mm) and the diesel model comes with sensibly sized tyres, not the low-profile jobs just about useless off bitumen as on some prestige SUVs. The transmission also has a hill-holder for smooth uphill starts.

Standard is the Porsche traction management in the permanent all-wheel-drive system, distributing the torque to best advantage. It's normally set at 62 rear and 38 front until anything starts to slip.

And it wouldn't be a top-brand Euro without a good stability control system, in this case one that also recognises any swaying or pendulum motion of a trailer and dabs appropriate brakes as required. A 3.5-tonne tow rate puts it among the big, tough boys, too.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

February 17th 2009 12:14
Mercedes-Benz has used the arrival of the new E-Class sedan to also announce a coupe version that wipes out the CLK range.

And it's an odd decision for a nameplate that has done so well.

Like the CLK, the new coupe is an amalgam of components from various Benz models but is more closely aligned to the medium large E-Class than anything else.

Due to lob here in July with the new sedan, the coupe brings with it a range of new engines and sensational low slung styling destined to set a new benchmark in the segment.

There will be numerous variants of the new hard top coupe (a ragtop cabriolet arrives late this year) starting with a 250CGi direct fuel injection petrol V6 and a 220CDi turbo diesel four cylinder.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

Pricing is expected to follow the precedent set by the new Benz C-Class which was pitched lower than the model it replaced.

Other coupe models include the 250CDi diesel with 150kW and 500Nm output, a 350CGi direct injection petrol V6 with 215kW and a 500 petrol V8.

All V6 and V8 models will have a seven speed auto with the fours having five speed autos in Aussie spec'.

The new coupe is said to be a genuine four seater with individual seats and adequate rear headroom. The boot is large.

At this stage, no AMG version of the coupe is on the drawing board but a sports pack comprising brake and suspension upgrades could be available for the 500 coupe.

Technologies and new features from the E-Class sedan will flow through into the coupe including safety, luxury and performance features.

Passat Misses Insurance Discount

February 12th 2009 12:20
The new VW Passat CC is being denied an insurance discount offered to the Volvo XC60.

Crash avoidance technology in the Passat will not attract the 20 per cent insurance premium discount being offered to a similar system in the XC60.

VW's new adaptive cruise control with front assist will operate from 30-150km/h and bring the car to a complete stop.

If a rear-end collision is imminent, the car will sound and flash a warning to the driver, bring the disc pads up to the discs, increase brake pressure and even dab the brakes.

However, the driver then has to take over — and that is one of the major differences with the Volvo City Safety radar system.

NRMA Insurance last week offered a 20 per cent discount to XC60 owners based on the car’s new radar technology designed to prevent rear-end collisions, which are the most common insurance claims.

Passat Insurance

However, spokesman Robert McDonald says the VW system would not qualify for several reasons.

McDonald says the Volvo system intervenes and brings the car to a complete stop on its own, and will operate under 30km/h – the speed range where most rear-enders occurred.

In comparison, the VW adaptive cruise control will operate from 30-150km/h and will come to a complete stop, but not in an emergency situation where driver input is required.

Cost of repairs is also a consideration, McDonald says.

"The radar sensor on the VW is on the front grille and if that gets damaged it can be quite expensive," he says.

"In some cars it costs up to $10,000 to replace. The Volvo sensor is on the windscreen."

The second-generation VW adaptive cruise control system is an update of the one originally designed for the ill-fated Phaeton luxury saloon.

VW Passat CC

February 11th 2009 10:43
A car that parks itself, will survive most punctures and avoid rear-ender crashes is now available in Australia.

The VW Passat CC features self-parking and the accident avoidance radar as options, but is the first car in Australia to be fitted standard with Continental’s new ContiSeal tyre which seals itself if it runs over a sharp object no wider than 5mm.

The tyres cost $550, which is $50 more than the standard tyre, and are available in limited sizes for fitting to vehicles other than the Passat CC.

Volkswagen Group Australia service general manager Phil Murray yesterday demonstrated the tyre’s abilities to withstand a puncture by drilling into a standard tyre with a 5mm drill bit, then into the ContiSeal.

VW Passat CC

The ContiSeal failed to deflate.

The tyre is coated inside with a polymer coating which is a tacky tar-like material.

“This is not a run-flat tyre,” Murray said.

“Its performance is the same as the standard high-performance (Continental ContiSport).

“You don’t have the harshness of a run flat tyre.

“Änd in the unlikely case you have to change a tyre there is still an alloy full-size spare wheel.”

The ContiSeals do not weigh extra like run flats and they are not restricted to distance and speed when punctured.

Continental has warned that because the motorist won't notice when their tyre has been punctured, they should regularly examine the tyre for nails or screws.

The Passat CC arrives with a two-litre diesel engine at $54,990 or with a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine at $65,990.

BMW Mini Crossover All-wheel Drive

February 9th 2009 11:27
Mini is joining the all-road fun set.

Its first all-wheel drive, which will become one of the world's smallest crossovers, looks set to go sale in Australia late in 2011.

The yet-to-be-named crossover, which is nearly production-ready, is likely to be launched at the Detroit Motor Show in January and go on sale in Europe and the United States late next year. It should arrive in Australia six to nine months after that.

It had been tipped that the wagon would be shown at the Geneva motor show in March, but Mini has reserved that spotlight to launch a JCW version of its sexy new cabrio which is coming to Australia next year.

Mini is still remaining coy about the crossover, the first Mini not to be built at its traditional home in Oxford, England. Instead it will come off the same production line as the existing BMW X3 at the Magna Steyr plant in Austria.

BMW Mini Crossover

The X3 will soon shift to Spartanburg to make way for the crossover which will be built on an all new and larger 4.1-metre platform. It had been tipped Mini would use BMWs new X1 platform but Mini insiders say this has been discounted as not practical.

What we do know is the crossover will use a modified version of BMW's full time xDrive system which proportions drive between front and rear axles. Mini engineers have had to convert it from having a rear-wheel drive bias as in BMWs X3 and X5 to fit Mini's primarily front-wheel drive layout.

As for the name: forget Crossman, as widely reported by German media. It definitely won't be called that.

“We had issues with MAN trucks over the Clubman name so we won't go there,” says Andreas Hofmann, the head of Mini's marketing communications.

“We are still working on the name and choice of engines."

The engine range is expected to match those under the bonnet of the existing Mini line-up but Hofmann hinted a diesel was more than likely for selected markets including Australia.

Production costs will mean the crossover will come as a conventional four-door wagon which is cheaper to build, although the design of the tailgate whether a single door, two barn doors or a split lift up, drop down design still has to be signed off.

Mini has been studying several tailgates on the crossover test mule which has kept the media guessing.

"We will be making a final decision on the design within three months," Hofman says.

The crossover concept, shown at the last Paris Motor Show, had a sliding rear passenger door on one side and a conventional door on the other.

And while the third generation Mini hatch will be launched in 2012, Mini traditionalists can relax — it won’t be stretched any further to fit on the longer crossover platform.

Mini insiders say there won’t be a maxi Mini. The current hatch will not grow any more in size as it would be out of proportion on the crossover’s 4.1-metre long platform.

If you’re hanging out for a hot hatch Mini with all-wheel drive, you will be waiting for a long time.

Mini will fit a BMW-sourced xDrive system to its upcoming crossover wagon but the system won’t be fitted to any other model just yet.

A Mini all-wheel drive JCW hatch or cabriolet would be desirable as a flagship, but Mini says it would be far too expensive.

Mercedes 300SL Gullwing

January 27th 2009 10:15
The ultimate in recession-proof cars will shine under a silver star in a little over six months.

As Porsche prepares its luxury Panamera, and Aston Martin worries over its four-door Rapide, Mercedes-Benz is certain of success with its upcoming Gullwing.

It knows the combination of the retro-futuristic Gullwing name and body, and a 320km/h mechanical package from its go-faster AMG division, will mean certain success for the fastest car to carry its badge.

The Gullwing has been an open secret for more than a year, with camouflaged test cars running around Europe and logging laps at the Nurburgring, but now company executives are talking openly about the car.

Benz's safety chief, Ulrich Mellinghoff, talks now about crashing testing carbon fibre body parts for the Gullwing and the head of AMG, Volker Mornhinweg, is dropping hints about the engine for the car.

Mercedes Gullwing
Mercedes Gullwing

"The crashing testing is more like a convertible. There is no energy path through the roof," says Mellinghoff.

He also admits the nature of carbon fibre, expected to used for the majority of the car, means there will be aluminium crash panels at each end to absorb impact forces.

"With carbon fibre you cannot see if there is any internal damage. It can look perfect, but crumbles if you bump it."

The biggest question of all for the Gullwing is the engine, with Mornhinweg talking enthusiastically about everything from a new V6 - which is being developed for the baby A and B-Class cars - to the existing 6.2-litre V8 and the V12 used in the SL 'Black Series' with twin turbochargers.

But his biggest hint is that something new - perhaps a new-age 5.5- litre V8 - could do the job.

"We are working hard on something we launch in 2010. It will be a new engine," he says.

"I think later this year we will have more to say."

But he lays false trails everywhere, talking about a range of powerplants.

"We work very hard on our current 6.2-litre engine. There are a lot of new technologies," he says.

"Direct injection with piezo control . . . to make combustion in a perfect way. We also have some opportunity to put the turbocharger on some engines.

"For the smaller cars we have decided on an engine, but I don't want to talk. It's a very interesting thing, we have outstanding performance but we can reduce the fuel consumption."

Getting away from the mechanics and safety, the Gullwing is expected to have a paddle-shift gear system, LED running lights in the top of the headlamp cluster and giant metallic disc brakes.

It is intended to completely out-strip the McLaren-Mercedes SLR, a joint venture between Benz and its Formula One partner which has never hit its original sales targets, including production of as many as 6000 cars a year with a price-tag in the $500,000 range.

The Gullwing is widely predicted to star for Mercedes at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year, although its debut could be pushed back to Geneva in 2011 if the company decides its is inappropriate to make a huge splash during the worldwide economic downturn.

BMW Mini Diesel

January 22nd 2009 08:29
Mini has a new shade of green which will be the envy of its rivals.

A new diesel-powered Mini will arrive in Australia later this year to claim the title of Australia's cleanest new car, soundly beating the high-profile Toyota hybrid Prius.

Australian Mini models will start coming off the production line in Oxford, England, in March and are expected to be in the showrooms by late May, early June.

Pricing is yet to be finalised, but it is expected the base Mini D will come with a $34,000 price tag which is $700 more than the existing 1.6-litre entry level petrol model, the three-door Mini Cooper.

A better equipped Chilli version is expected to be priced at just under $38,000, about $1000 more than the petrol version.

The turbocharged 1.6-litre diesel will come with two big drawcards - frugal fuel economy and boasting rights, being greenest engine of any new car sold here.

Mini Cooper D

Mini says the Cooper D's fuel consumption is a claimed 3.9 litres per 100km, while CO2 emissions will be just 104g/km. The fuel consumption, in theory, gives the four-seater a range of 1025km from its 40-litre tank.

The engine is sourced by Mini from Peugeot. It's the same engine which powers the Peugeot 207 HDi, but the Mini beats its French rival in fuel consumption bragging right because it is almost 240kg lighter in kerb weight.

The cleanest car sold in Australia at present is the tiny tot 1-litre smart fortwo cabrio. Its CO2 level is 105g/km and achieves a claimed 4.4l/100km.

Other green-friendly fuel misers include the 1.5-litre petrol/electric Prius (106g/km, 4.4l/100km) and the 1.3-litre diesel Fiat 500 (111g/km, 4.2l/100km).

Australia's small car favourite, the 1.8-litre Toyota Corolla can only manage 172g/km and an average fuel consumption of 7.3l/100km.

Mini says the new D will feature fuel saving technology borrowed from parent company BMW including automatically switching off the engine when the car is stopped as well as brake energy regeneration and a dashboard display prompting the driver when to shift up a gear for maximum efficiency.

Other fuel-saving measures include a water pump for cooling and electric assistance for the power steering which are only switched on when needed.

The Cooper D will come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard and a six-speed auto as an option.

The common-rail 1.6-litre diesel with variable turbo boost produces 80kW and 240Nm of torque between 1750rpm and 2000rpm, but 70 per cent of maximum torque is on tap at 1250rpm. Torque can be boosted to 260Nm using maximum throttle for swifter overtaking.

On full boost, the Mini D takes a leisurely 9.9 seconds to hit 100km/h from a standing start, two tenths of a second quicker than the 207 HDi.

On the styling front, the D comes with an aerodynamic undertray, a slightly larger power dome on the bonnet and a slightly different grille to the air intake below the bumper.

On sale: Mid year

How much: $34,000 to $38,000

Power: 1.6-litre turbo diesel, 80kW at 4000rpm, 240Nm at 1750rpm (260Nm under full boost).

Fuel consumption: 3.9l/10km claimed, CO2 104g/km

Transmission: Six-speed manual, six speed auto optional

Kerb weight: 1090kg
